Final Washngton Trip Post…

After a VERY late night at the dinner theater, showers got taken and suitcases got packed, and lights were out by 11:45 or so. After breakfast at 7:30, we were all packed and ready to roll by 8:15. This year’s group wasn’t quite as exhausted as last year’s…..we must have left something out because there weren’t a lot of ‘sleepers’ on the way home!!! ;) The weather for our return trip was gorgeous, our drivers made great time, and we were able to stop at about 1:30 near Lumberton, North Carolina for lunch at Golden Corral. Bryan D’s grandparents (who live nearby) were able to come by and surprise Bryan on their way to Raleigh with their other grandsons. The restaurant was quite nice and very accommodating to our group. The chaperones received several compliments from the staff on how well behaved the students were. One said ours was the BEST group of children she had ever seen there! Once everyone had filled their bellies, we hit the road once more and pulled into MOES right on time at 6:30. Nearly all the parents (and other family members) were there eagerly awaiting the arrival of the weary travelers. A few tears were shed as the students said goodbye to Tiffany C, who will begin school in Summerville on Monday; she stayed with us in order to make this trip with her classmates. We’ll all miss her smiling face, but we know we’ll hear from her soon!

It was extremely gratifying to hear the MANY compliments we received about our students on this trip; we have such a wonderful family at Mossy Oaks and we are so lucky to be able to demonstrate that outside of our community! The trip of 2010 is now history……now we get to work on getting those 4th graders ready for next year!!! :)

Thursday in Washington DC…

We had a VERY full day today! After ‘sleeping in’ until 6:45, we ate breakfast and hit the road by 8:00 in order to see the Korean War Memorial during the daylight hours, and stop at the Vietnam Wall. It’s always a very solemn time, especially when students realize the significance of all the names. Alexis Kelnhofer and Christopher Willingham were able to make an etching of the name of their grandfather’s cousin, PFC Joseph A. Kelnhofer, who died in Vietnam at the age of 19. From there, we made our way to the Smithsonian Museums. We were able to visit two of the museums prior to lunch and our visit to the Capitol (where we met briefly with Rep. Joe Wilson before taking a short tour there), and then we returned to visit the Air and Space Museum afterwards. By 5:30, we were headed to the Lazy Susan Dinner Theater where we enjoyed a  dinner buffet followed by a live stage production of Shenandoah. This made for a VERY late evening, but a good time was had by all. Lights out was quite late after showers and packing, and we plan to be on the road heading back to Beaufort by 8:00 am! Our whirlwind visit is coming to an end, but we packed in as much as possible and enjoyed every moment….even the nosebleeds, the lost tooth, and the lost or stolen cell phone!! Well, Mrs. Kelnhofer really isn’t enjoying that last one much, but in the grand scheme of things…..she says it’s just a little inconvenience that can be easily remedied on Saturday!!!

Day Two Update from Washington!

Here is the entry from Day 2- 1st day on the ground…
___________________________________________________

Day Two update:

We were up with the sun this morning at 5:45 – eating breakfast at 6:30 – and on the bus to leave at 7:00! We got stuck in a little DC traffic and arrived at the White House about 7:45. We stood in line quite awhile to get through the two checkpoints before being allowed in, and three of our group were held back due to glitches with their names being on “THE LIST”! They did get in, but were separated from the rest of the group. Thanks to Mrs. Lubkin for staying back with them so that the entire group wasn’t held up.

From the White House, we headed to Arlington National Cemetery for the 12:15 wreath-laying ceremony. Jocelyn Thompson, Will Severns, Brooke Maynard, and Taylor Jones represented Mossy Oaks well! Will received a very special surprise as they came back up the steps from the ceremony…..his father, who is stationed in Honduras with the Air Force, had flown in to surprise him!!!! He was accompanied by Will’s grandfather and another gentleman. Needless to say, Will was thrilled and his father and grandfather were so very proud!

After lunch at a local food court, we picked up our wonderful Washington tour guide, Dr. Kathleen, and headed up Embassy Road to the National Cathedral. It was quite interesting to hear the history of this famous church where Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan are interred, but the gargoyles on the outside of the building drew the most interest! We also spent time today at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial before heading to the ESPN Zone for a buffet dinner. Since we had completed our itinerary for the day earlier than expected, we decided to treat the group to a ride on the DC Metro! Most of the students were thrilled to have this opportunity, and it was a great way to end the evening. We were back at the hotel by 8:45, and have the kids settled in and lights out by 10:00.

Day One: Washington Trip April, 2010

Here is the 1st post from Day 1 and the trip from Beaufort to the  Capital…
_________________________________________________________
We had a nice trip up; made great time and checked into our motel in Springfield, VA. almost an hour early! We then headed to the Pentagon City Mall Food Court for dinner, followed by an ‘Illumination Tour’ of some of the sights around the city. Since it was raining lightly after we ate, we made our stop at Joe’s Souvenir Shop this evening, rather than waiting until tomorrow. I’m pretty sure everyone in the group left there with some type of souvenir of DC – many of them sporting new sweatshirts for the rest of the evening tour! We then made our way to the Korean War Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial before returning to the motel for the night. By 9:45, everyone had phoned home, showered, and been hugged good-night. Lights out at 10:00 with a promise of a 5:45 wake-up call in the morning!!! We’ll be eating breakfast at 6:30, getting on the bus at 7:00, and touring the White House by 7:30!!! Whew!!!

Notes from Washington Trip Coming this Week!!!

We will be posting notes from the Fifth Grade Washington Trip this coming week- We might even have a photo or two to spice things up, and maybe even a short video link to watch!  Can you imagine how exciting this will be for our students to visit and tour Washington DC. They will visit Arlington Cemetary, the White House, and the Smithsonian Institution to mention a few stops. The Cherry Blossoms should still be in bloom and overall I think the weather will be great. These students work hard to earn this trip and ultimately learn quite a bit as they tour the great capital of our nation. Check back on Wed- Saturday to see what they share so that all of us can be a part of this exciting experience.

Spring Ahead at MOE!

Many things happening at MOE this spring and upcoming this very weekend we all change our clocks for Daylight Savings time.  The PASS Writing test is Mar 16th and 17th for grades 3-5. Please make sure your children are here on time!  The fifth grade Washington trip is coming up and if your child is participating there is a Parent meeting on March 25th at 6:00 pm in the Library. This meeting is mandatory for all involved in the trip. Spring break comes none to soon as this has been a really long winter. Those dates are  March 29th- April 5th.  Hope you will be spending some time with your family- I know I will be curled up with a good book and a tall glass of tea!

Finally, the awards for this quarter will happen after we get back from break – April 7th – 9th. Look for more detail on that after vacation.  Safe travels to all and Happy Easter!

Black History Month and more this Feb…

This month we honor African Americans who have made a contribution in history.  We also have several fundraisers such as Pennies for Patients, The fourth grade Easter fundraiser, and Hearts for Haiti. Teachers should be sending home information on these activities as well as our “blue note” for parents.

Lobby Guard has arrived in our front office so please be prepared to sign in with photo ID. It is our hope that this will help to make us all more secure here at MOE.  It is a computer based sentry that asks for information to be input and then prints out a photo ID for you to wear. It is to the left as you enter the main office.

There is no school Monday Feb 15th for students but teachers will attend staff training and in-service that day.  Please feel free to stop by the school and see what we have been doing as we have some pretty cool classes going on each and every day!
